Valerie Ong has been in the national team set up since the age of 14. Now at 20, she’s a mainstay in the team. Her good looks have also gotten her into a lot of attention in the field.
What female empowerment mean to you?
To me, female empowerment is to eliminate gender inequality as we are just as capable as men.
What does the International Women’s Day slogan, #ChooseToChallenge mean for you in your life?
To me, it means we should be courageous and to overcome stereotypes. For my sport (football), too many people see it solely as a men’s game. We should choose to challenge that misconception, as we drive for acceptance and respect in football.
What barriers have you faced, as a woman, in becoming successful in your field? How did you overcome them?
Too many times people have looked down on me when they hear that I play football. I never allow that attitude to get to me and use it as motivation to prove them wrong.
Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?
Never let the negative comments get to you and keep on pushing the boundaries!
How important is it for women to lift each other up and what does that mean to you?
There’s strength in numbers, when we lift each other up, we can overcome any challenges and achieve equality.
On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women?
There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.
